As with so many of his achievements, necessity and circumstance figured heavily. ![]() ![]() More known for his reticence than for his eloquence, he was often depicted as a cigar-chewing stoic rather than a leader who expressed himself publicly. Yet for all his fame, Grant was a private man not given to literary pursuits. In America during the late nineteenth century, many celebrated figures wrote autobiographies, and many Civil War heroes less prominent than Grant published memoirs to great acclaim. By the end of the war, Grant was the highest-ranking general of the victorious Union army and he rode his immense popularity to two terms as president of the United States (1868–1876). Grant (1822–1885) wrote a Civil War memoir. It is both fitting and surprising that Ulysses S. ![]()

![]() This is really good fun an excellent introduction to Robert as botha writer and a reader though the interview at the end is a little bemusing if you've not heard or read any of his previous booksthat should in no way distract you from the main story. A private eye story with Tom our hero teaming up with a drinken teddy bear to scour Toy City for the murderer of Humpty DUmpty (it's more fun than it sounds) and a final battle section which explaining will really mess up the books suprises. Roughly it splits into three parts an insane and hysterical fairy tale world (listen to the sample for an idea of this). ![]() In the meantime however enjoy this stand alone story. ![]() Robert Rankin has an excellent series of unabridged self read audio books available covering the massively inaccurately named Brentford Trilogy harrass the Audible staff to get them in. ![]() 6/27/2023 0 Comments Reign of wrath eva ashwood![]() ![]() Gage is Ryder, aka the leader of the group.Comparison to Den of VipersĪs I read the first book, I couldn’t help but compare the two stories together as each of the guys fits a specific role that lines up with the guys in Den of Vipers. 'The Unit' is both enjoyable as a superficial read, and an extraordinarily current thinker. 23 Responses to Review of The Unit by Ninni Holmqvist. Jessica Crispin, NPR.org Ninni Holmqvist’s uncanny dystopian novel envisions a society in the not-so-distant future, where women over fifty and men over sixty who are unmarried and childless are sent to a retirement. However Holmqvist has pushed past the theme of female-oriented oppression, and explored what it means to be oppressed in the name of the greater good, indiscriminate of sex. Urn:lcp:unitnovel00holm:lcpdf:a9b24d7c-0af8-4100-af0c-8b0818b75da4 Echoing work by Marge Piercy and Margaret Atwood, The Unit is as thought-provoking as it is compulsively readable. Reading this story was a delightful way to spend my Sunday, while giving my own faith a boost. As has been the case with the other stories of women of the Bible whom Francine writes about, Ruth was not an Israelite by birth, but a woman who came into the faith because of the support and love she received from someone who was - and in this case was her mother-in-law. Overall, I'd say the novella was still worth reading, and Francine Rivers managed to capture the emotions of what would have been felt by the grieving widows who together had to learn how to trust the God they served and what He had in store for them. ![]() ![]() Whenever the women or men would have snippets of conversations between them about Naomi or Ruth, it seemed to break up the flow of the story. The only thing I would have changed were the brief commentaries by the rest of the onlookers who were observing their lives. Romantic Times This novella includes an in-depth Bible study perfect for personal reflection or group discussion. ![]() Francine Rivers spins a tale that’s not only true to history, but satisfying to the heart. Not only did it have a backstory on the lives of Naomi and Ruth, it added more depth to their characters than I would have thought about, making it a believable account. Unshaken is book three in the popular Lineage of Grace series about five unlikely women who changed eternity. Having watched a few movie portrayals of Ruth, the dutiful daughter-in-law to Naomi, I was eager to see what the novella would include. This story of Ruth as told by Francine Rivers is yet another good read I enjoyed. ![]() 6/26/2023 0 Comments The Road to Omaha by Robert Ludlum![]() ![]() It really took me a lot longer to get through it. I did enjoy this book, but it did seem to "drag" just a little more than Road to Gandolfo. The Bourne movies, starring Matt Damon in the title role, have been commercially and critically successful ( The Bourne Ultimatum won three Academy Awards in 2008), although the story lines depart significantly from the source material. A non-Ludlum book supposedly inspired by his unused notes, Covert One: The Hades Factor, has also been made into a mini-series. Some of Ludlum's novels have been made into films and mini-series, including The Osterman Weekend, The Holcroft Covenant, The Apocalypse Watch, The Bourne Identity, The Bourne Supremacy and The Bourne Ultimatum. One of the most powerful and significant authors in all modern fiction, Fyodor Dostoevsky was the son of a harsh and domineering army surgeon who was murdered by his own serfs (slaves), an event that was extremely important in shaping Dostoevsky's view of social and economic issues.
